Many of the scapulars have been replaced by adult-looking gray feathers. Picture: Maarten van Kleinwee.Third-calendar year European Herring Gull, moulting to third-winter plumage (third cycle, third prebasic moult). The head, neck and chest show extensive dark streaking. The bill has a light-pink base and a yellow tip, divided by a black band. All of the mantle feathers, scapulars, lesser and median coverts have been replaced for grey adult looking feathers. Most of the tertials and many of the greater coverts still show brown colouring. P8 fully grown. |
