Heermann's Gull heermannii 1st cycle (2CY), January 09 2016, Half Moon Bay, California USA. Picture: Alvaro Jaramillo.

As some of you will recall 2015 was essentially a year of complete breeding failure for this species, after looking through thousands of them in the fall, this is the first young of 2015 that I have found.
Adults are also now in breeding plumage with gleaming white heads. A second cycle Heermann's is included too for comparison, they have dark hoods which are largely unstreaked.

First cycle Heermann's Gull. The only bird from the 2015 season I have found thus far. Complete breeding failure for this species in 2015.
