Photo 8: sub-adult LBBG, October 22 2001 Westkapelle, the Netherlands.

Typical sub-adult LBBG with the old brown feathers strongly worn and bleached. Probably a 4cy bird with arrested moult at p5: p5 is full-grown, while p6-p10 are still old. Note the pattern on the new tertials (#1 old brown, #2-3 new, #4 growing, #5-6 old brown) which is as in many 3cy birds: the white tips are confined to the inner webs. Strongest feature pointing to 4cy are the outer primaries, with a small, hardly visible tip at p10. Probably the outer primaries (p6-p10) are 3rd generation flight feathers. This is supported by the brown outer primary coverts.
