Herring Gull (argentatus & argenteus)

(last update: February 11, 2013)

Herring Gull (argentatus) X6W9 2CY, April 09 2016, IJmuiden, the Netherlands.

Ringed as pullus on June 24 2015 on the island Beuchel, Rügen in Germany (54.32N, 13.18E). Few observation in its first winter, in Schleswig Holstein (see life-history, below pictures).

All flight feathers 1st gen, moult not started yet. Few lower scaps still juvenile as well.

After fledging X6W9 moved southwestto spend a period September-January near Neustadt. That was a pretty mild period. Apparently, when it started to get colder it moved on, either in the same direction as previously, a straight line over inland using e.g. landfills (we have ring readings of similar birds on dumps); or, slightly more likely, it followed the coastline and bended southwards when reaching the Dutch island Texel (this is more likely as the only locations it was seen thus far all were at the coast). Would be nice to have this kind of birds with geo-locator attached.
