First-calendar year (first cycle) European Herring Gull, moulting to winter plumage (first prebasic moult). The active scapular moult can be clearly seen in this invidual; the new second-generation scapulars with a cream base and dark markings contrast clearly with the dark-brown centered first-generation (juvenile) scapulars. Note also the white tips on the lower scapulars and the white notching on the tertials.
