Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) 2cy: February 04 2002, IJmuiden, the Netherlands (52.27 N, 4.33 E).

Note the juvenile wing-coverts and tertials which are very neat, without any obvious wear, just a few inner coverts and rear 2nd generation scapulars have slightly irregular fringes. The recently moulted second generation scapulars show an anchor pattern, a broad white fringe and a 'ginger'-coloured base. Some scapulars were moulted quite a while ago and show wear in the fringes. The base of the lower mandible starts to turn paler.
